Curriculum as a Service: A Ready-to-Teach Robotics and AI Program for Schools
Curriculum as a Service is TokyLabs' primary-school programme that builds hands-on robotics projects into subjects a school already teaches. The school's own teacher leads every lesson while a TokyLabs specialist co-teaches live from the classroom projector, using screen-free TokyMini kits, about four hours of teacher training and lesson materials prepared in advance.
It is not another subject to squeeze into the timetable, and it is not an online class. It is a service built around your curriculum, your teachers and your classrooms.
How does the embedded model work?
Your school picks two subjects per term to host a robotics project, for example Science and Maths, and each project runs over about four sessions. Projects can sit in Science, Maths, Art, Language or Humanities.
- Staggered: one subject runs its project at the start of term, the other at mid-term, so materials and teachers never compete.
- Inquiry first, kit second: students start from a real question, and the robot is the evidence, not the objective.
- Something built at the end: every project finishes with a build students designed, tested and can explain.
- The same kit all year: students build real mastery instead of meeting a new toy every term.
Example student projects include a smart wind-powered house, a cicada insect robot, a Blooming Flowerbot, an interactive pop-up card, a smart parking system and a marble-run contraption.
Does it fit our curriculum?
Yes. There is no fixed syllabus to adopt; before anything is scheduled, TokyLabs studies your programmes of study with your coordinators and picks projects that land inside units your teachers already deliver.
It works with national curricula, IB PYP, Cambridge Primary, US standards and bilingual programmes, in your language of instruction. Content covers energy, circuits, light, motion and sensors, plus sequencing and algorithms. Projects also develop thinking, research, collaboration and self-management, so they can be evidenced in the skills framework you report on. A written curriculum crosswalk is available on request.
What happens in a lesson?
Your teacher runs the room, and TokyLabs is live in the corner of the projector. The teacher introduces, paces, manages and closes the lesson; the specialist steps in the moment technical help is needed and stays quiet the rest of the time.
A wireless microphone lets the teacher walk between tables and still talk to TokyLabs, and a standard webcam lets the specialist spot a wiring mistake before it derails the class. No outside staff enter the building. The pedagogy is screenless: students spend almost the whole lesson with cardboard, screws, blocks and sensors, and the projector shows only the steps and the aim.
What does our school need to provide?
Standard classroom equipment and TokyMini kits; there is nothing specialised to install or maintain.
| Item | Detail |
|---|---|
| TokyMini kits | About one set per five students, for every table |
| Projector and laptop | A laptop with a standard webcam |
| Wireless microphone | So the teacher can move freely and stay in contact |
| Staff time | About 4 hours of upfront training per teacher, plus facilitator training for assistant teachers |
TokyMini is designed for children aged 6 to 9. Physical puzzle pieces snap together into a program, and TokyMini reads it and drives sensors and motors, so children can build a smart home, a puppet, a piano or a remote-controlled robot.
How does the rollout and trial term work?
Curriculum as a Service starts with a one-term trial inside your timetable. This is different from the free one-workshop pilot described on the For Schools page.
Every school starts with a one-term trial: two subjects, across all groups of a single year level. The term ends with a real student project, such as a robot that reacts to light, and optional evidence (photos, video and reflection templates) for your formative assessment records. If the trial term succeeds, the model extends across the primary school.
- Memorandum of Understanding: scope, year level and trial subjects agreed in principle.
- Agreement signed: annual framework and trial term terms confirmed.
- Curriculum study: host subjects chosen with your coordinators.
- Projects aligned: projects mapped to your units; decks and materials produced.
- Teacher training: about 4 hours per teacher, plus facilitator training.
- Students building: classes run with TokyLabs live in every session.
This typically takes about six months from first conversation to students building, fitted to your academic year.
What is included, and how is it priced?
One service covers everything around the lesson. It is priced per class, so cost scales with what you run, and TokyLabs quotes after a 45-minute call about your year levels and subjects.
- A live specialist on the projector in every session
- Curriculum mapping, and every lesson deck and material prepared in advance
- Teacher certification training, plus unlimited training and a direct support line for your point of contact
- Full TokyLabs academy access: modules, videos and digital handouts
- A partner discount on TokyMini kits, buffer stock on site and no minimum order for spare parts
- A framed TokyLabs STEM Innovation Affiliated Centre certificate
Optional add-ons include student certificates, teacher evaluation rubrics and international robotics events across the TokyLabs network.
Frequently asked questions
Is Curriculum as a Service an online class?
No. The lesson is taught in person by your own teacher. TokyLabs is support on the projector, not the instructor.
Do our teachers need to be tech experts?
No. They need to be good facilitators. About four hours of training is enough, because TokyLabs gives live technical support in every session.
Do assistant teachers need training too?
Yes, and it is a requirement. Every assistant teacher is trained as a facilitator, which matters most in bilingual classrooms.
Can it work with our makerspace?
Yes. It turns a makerspace into a hub serving many subjects, and without one the model runs in ordinary classrooms by design.
What if hardware breaks or goes missing?
Buffer stock at your school replaces parts instantly, TokyLabs keeps local stock, and partners reorder with no minimum order.
